YES, IT’S TRUE. I wrote a book…a story book…a work of fiction.
At last. Finally. Amen.
Rest assured, I’ll be doing more talking about it, the changes it has brought, and my adventures as an author in the months to come. For now, I wanted to address the question I hear most often upon announcing Mr. Coleman’s debut: “What’s it about?”
Here’s a sneak peek at the back cover overview — written by my editor at Being Point Press, Mr. Keith Ferrell:
When Mr. Coleman enters his life, Tim cannot begin to imagine the ways in which the chimpanzee’s presence will affect him, his relationships to friends and loved ones, and above all to himself and to his very sense of what it means to be human…
With his first novel, Scot Simmons tackles one of literature’s grand themes: What does it mean to be human? How do we best engage our humanity – andto what purposes will we put our lives, our talents, our awareness?
These are the questions underlying a loving, lively story of the relationship between Tim, the novel’s narrator, and Mr. Coleman, the chimpanzee whom Tim comes to love, and from whom he learns lessons that will change his life.
As the relationship – the bond of understanding – between human and chimpanzee deepens, Tim is cast back on a quest through his own past, through memories of mistakes, opportunities, and decisions made. Mr. Coleman is ultimately a love story, a story of second chances and unexpected revelations.
Filled with beautifully rendered incidents and provocative insights, Mr. Coleman will move readers to consider the nature of their own lives, even as they, like Tim, grow to love the unforgettable Mr. Coleman.
Mr. Coleman marks the debut of a distinctive new writer. Scot Simmons tells Mr. Coleman’s story beautifully and deeply. It is a story that speaks to all of us.
OK. That answers Question Number One. The rest will have to wait til later.
